Melania Restaurant

George Kannavias, son of the restaurant’s original owners, now manages this wonderful restaurant.

The history of the restaurant is very interesting...

It was in 1935 that Andreas tou Giorgi (a native of Chloraka), George’s grandfather, purchased the plot of land where Melania Restaurant is located from the Kae family. He spent most of his life growing tomatoes, onions, melons and cauliflower until 1971.

In 1971, his daughter, Elli Kannavia, and her husband, Matthaios Kannavias, George’s parents, planted a vineyard with a very large grape production.

On 27 June 1988, Melania Restaurant was founded by Elli and Matthaios, and they began serving homemade meals. Their four children, Maria, Kyriaki, George and Charalambos, began helping in the kitchen, serving customers and cleaning — and even dancing the Zorba and Sirtaki!

On 9 November 1989, all of the family’s crops and greenhouses were also destroyed. Friends of the restaurant, mainly British customers, came together to offer their support in many ways: painting, construction work, cleaning and even fundraising.

Elli, Matthaios and their four children, stronger and more positive than ever, replanted the crops and rebuilt the restaurant.

On 1 June 2018, George Kannavias became the new owner of the restaurant. Elli (74) and Matthaios (79) decided to retire and spend more time with their seven grandchildren. They swim every morning and grow many vegetables, fruits and potatoes for the restaurant and their family. They still help with the cooking whenever necessary.
